Tyler Edlin

Edlin’s cityscape conveys depth through the use of aerial perspective by having the buildings in the distance fade away and appear lighter than objects in the foreground. The image also has several examples of isometric projection, making all the buildings appear three-dimensional within the two-dimensional plane. Implied texture is apparent in the wood grain of the different buildings as well as in the clouds surrounding the cityscape, giving the illusion of physical texture even though it is a flat image. The image also utilizes multi-point perspective to communicate how the buildings are arranged in space, having multiple vanishing points which allows the artist to have different levels of buildings at once.

Excellent! Thank you for doing homework # 4! It does tie into our next project!!

Design Homework
Week 4
chapters 9,10, and 12

Pattern- (book definition) is a term ubiquitous to design. It has one meaning when we think of a “dress pattern” or template, and it has another, more general meaning referring to repetition of a design motif. (My definition) a pattern is the repetition of one shape or design continued through the layout of the design.

How do we create visual interest? - ( book definition) - Texture refers to the surface quality of objects. Texture appeals to our sense of touch. Even when we do not actually feel an object, our memory provides a sensory reaction or sensation of touch. ( my definition) we create visual interest by making the piece of artwork appealing to the eye. By using different types and shades of color we can also accomplish that goal.

Actual Tactile Texture - ( Book definition ) - texture that can actually be felt. In painting, the same term describes an uneven paint surface, produced when an artist uses thick pigment (a technique called impasto) to create a rough, three-dimensional paint surface. ( my definition ) where the art piece is portraying different surfaces of texture by using multiple styles of line and colors.

Implied Texture - ( book definition) Texture becomes a visual history of the painting’s creation.( my definition) implied texture is texture that has a feel of surface to it. Meaning that when someone looks that that piece of art they made it so that the pattern of color scheme that they choose, Brings out a unique feel to it causing it to look like it can be touched or has a different feel to it.

How are both texture and pattern similar, and how do they differ from each other? Texture and pattern are similar yet different. Pattern can be used to accentuate the feel of texture that is trying to be shown. Texture can also help further define the type of patterns or styles that one is using to get a message across. They are similar yet very different at the same time. Both can been used in harmony yet both can be different and quite useful on their own.

Collage - ( my definition) a collage is an assortment of pictures or images that are brought together to help emphasize the message or piece of artwork.

Trompe L’oeil -( book definition) The ultimate point in portraying visual texture is called trompe l’oeil, a French term meaning “to fool the eye.” ( my definition) - basically using different types of patterns and shapes to for a realistic looking texture to fool the eye into thinking that it is real.

List some devices to show depth, and explain how they function:  Size- by using size you can make it so that the image can appear to be getting smaller or bigger by laying them out in a certain order that creates depth . overlapping- by overlapping you can create different types of new shapes and designs that would also create depth. Overlapping objects or images can create new images or objects. vertical location- by locating an object or design in a vertical you can make the image look as if it is turning as well as help it to create different types of balances.aerial perspective- is when you use different angles to gather the whole layout of the area that  you are using. , plan elevation perspective- is when you use an assortment of lines that help guide you into positioning the images in the correct order and place that is needed. linear perspective- shows the size, shape, and position of objects and is drawn to show the angle of the drawing.one-point perspective- by using one point perspective you are only using one part of a dimension to create your desired art pieces many different types of perspectives can be used when trying to create depth or make an object seem as if it is looking in a different area or if it’s smaller than what it appears to be. two-point and multi-perspective - this perspective helps you to see more than just one type of perspective. By using this you can move your images around creating depth , value and other types of functions. Using multiple perspectives helps you to see the bigger picture of the object or art piece.

What is an isometric projection?- is when you use three dimensional objects as well as two dimensional objects and find out their correct coordinates

Equivocal space - (My definition) A design that moves and changes as we look at it like an optical design almost.

Value - ( book definition) Value is simply the art and design term for light and dark. Our perception of gure and ground depends on relationships of light and dark. ( my definition) value can be defined as being shading used to give depth to a figure Or drawing . Using tones from light to dark is also value.

Value emphasis - ( book definition) A thematically important character or feature can be visually emphasized by value contrast. High dark- and-light contrast instantly attracts our attention because of value emphasis.( my definition) the main focused of The piece that has expressed value or draws attention towards the art work.

Value to suggest space - ( book definition) A thematically important character or feature can be visually emphasized by value contrast. High dark- and-light contrast instantly attracts our attention because of value emphasis. ( my definition) using the values of Light and darkness as well as shading can suggest that there is movement or space inside the piece.

Excellent…thanks for working so hard…great job kiddo!

Artist :
Kaff- Eine

Kaff-eine is a street artist, her work is something that gave me inspiration as soon as I stumbled across it. This picture is one of the few that captured my eyes. Her use of value in the animal’s skeleton as well as the value emphasis in the middle of the painting gives it great depth and emotion. She uses dark colors to give the viewer a certain type of emotion as they look at this piece. By creating the child like figure  in the middle a more smaller size than the rest of the  figures, suggests it to be like they are either protecting the small child or the child is simply with them. They composition that she chose also suggests it being a linear composition, she angles the larger animal like humans in a triangle going backwards while the child is the main focus.  This piece also creates great visual interest. By using the colors grey and black it attracts the viewers and makes them want to look closely to see what the images suggest. The use of the red and white on the child’s shirt also draws your attention to the center of the piece creating a sense of visual unity. In my opinion this  piece speaks volumes, it may not have any words attached to it but I believe that the artist wants the viewer to create a story that goes along with this painting.

Excellent..thank-you!

Vocabulary

Pattern – we think of a “dress pattern” or template, and it has a more general meaning referring to repetition of a design.

How do we create visual interest?

The element of texture is illustrated in art when an artist purposely exploits contrasts in surface to provide visual interest.

Actual Tactile Texture – Texture that can actually be felt.

Implied Tactile Texture – Uses a thick pigment (impasto) to create a rough, three-dimensional paint surface.

How are both texture and pattern similar, and how do they differ from each other?

Pattern is usually defined as a repetitive design, with the same design appearing again and again. Texture, too, often repeats, but its variations usually do not involve such perfect regularity. The difference between texture and pattern seems to be whether the surface arouses our sense of touch or merely provides designs appealing to the eye.

Collage – creating a design by pasting down bits and pieces of colored and textured papers, cloth, or other materials.

Trompe L’oeil – meaning “to fool the eye,” This style if commonly defined as “deceptive painting.”

List some devices to show depth, and explain how they function

Size – The easiest way to create an illusion of space or distance is through size.

Overlapping – is a simple device for creating an illusion of depth.

Vertical location – is a spatial device in which elevation on the page or format indicates a recession into depth.

Aerial perspective – describes the use of color or value (dark and light) to show depth.

Plan elevation perspective – is a technical drawing of a building that falls within the definition of architecture.

Linear perspective – is a complex spatial system based on relatively simple visual phenomenon: as parallel lines recede, they appear to converge and to meet on an imaginary line called the horizon.

One-point perspective – drawing method that shows how things appear to get smaller as they get further away.

Two/Multi point perspective – linear perspective in which parallel lines along the width and depth of an object are represented as meeting at two separate vanishing points.

What is an isometric projection?

Is used extensively in engineering and mechanical drawings, is less commonly used among contemporary artists.

Equivocal space – many artists find t a more interesting visual pattern than the immediately clear spatial organization provided by overlapping in a design.

Value –   is simply the art and design term for light and dark.

Value emphasis – High dark-and-light contrast instantly attracts our attention, by planning high contrast in one area and subdued contrast elsewhere, the artist can ensure where the viewer’s eye is directed.

Value to suggest space – On a flat surface, value can be used to impart a three-dimensional quality to shapes.

Alyssa Rodriguez, 2/17/16

I made this piece in my senior year of my AP art class. I wanted to draw attention to the idea of a liar. I purposely used value emphasis to direct the viewer’s eye to the crossed fingers, putting it in color to make it stand out. The majority of some people’s lives is spent lying to whoever will listen to them. Inspired by the seven deadly sins I was presented with the challenge to create five of my own sins, fabrication being one of them. I wanted to have some visual interest by harnessing the contrasts between the darkest dark’s to the lightest light’s.

I tend to think my sweater uses actual tactile texture it looks as if it could be touched. Overlapping and aerial perceptive the colors gives this piece more of an illusion of depth.  Without the hints of navy blue, dark gray, and black this piece would look flat. I really wanted to show you a wide range of gray-scale making sure it doesn’t consist of the same color. The highlighted areas are only to show lighter areas of the figure. Despite the anatomy of the hand this is one of my personal favorites.

Excellent Alyssa!

moore2dharder:

Although i could not find the name of the artist who created this street art, I believe this piece uses many of the Devices to show depth such as Overlapping by laying what is the top of the water over the rocks below, depth is established between the relationships of the objects. The artist also uses Aerial Perspective by using color or value to show depth, the bottom of the water appears faded and the top of the water is more in focus.

The artist also has a good sense of pattern from the shapes on the top that appear to be repeating. I also feel as though the piece shows implied texture because the rocks under the water are not fully developed they are more stylized but still give a feeling of being rocky. The artist also has a good sense of value, everything is defined in itself and stands out nothing blends together.

Wow ! Excellent job Arianna! I love the painting too!
